Active, Safe Pedestrian Crossing with Hybrid Lighting and D-6 Sign “SIGN FLASH / WALKING PEDESTRIAN”

The active pedestrian crossing with hybrid lighting and the D-6 sign is a modern road safety enhancement system that combines dedicated LED pedestrian crossing lighting with an active D-6 sign of the “SIGN FLASH” or “WALKING PEDESTRIAN” type. This solution is designed specifically for high-risk areas – pedestrian crossings in cities, near schools, on arterial roads, and in zones with increased pedestrian traffic.

The system can be powered in several ways:

  • Solar pedestrian crossing lighting – powered by photovoltaic panels
  • Hybrid pedestrian crossing lighting – photovoltaic panels + wind turbine
  • Lighting powered by a 230 V grid connection – traditional electrical supply

Active D-6 Sign with Pedestrian Detection

The active D-6 sign “SIGN FLASH / WALKING PEDESTRIAN” is activated only when a pedestrian actually approaches the crossing. The system uses a dual, narrow-beam motion sensor that detects a pedestrian in the approach zone and then activates the signs on both sides of the roadway.

The sign is equipped with a radar sensor and activates only when it detects a vehicle approaching at excessive speed and not slowing down before the crossing – this provides a significantly higher chance of driver reaction compared to a sign that flashes continuously, which road users quickly become accustomed to. It is activated only by approaching vehicles, further increasing warning effectiveness.

Thanks to radio communication, both D-6 signs on both sides of the road illuminate synchronously, creating a clear and consistent warning signal for the driver about the presence of a pedestrian at the crossing.

Specialized LED Lighting for Pedestrian Crossings

The hybrid/solar lighting pole is equipped with a specifically designed LED luminaire for pedestrian crossings. The implemented asymmetric optics (left- or right-sided) ensure:

  • precise illumination of the crossing and pedestrian silhouette,
  • no glare effect for drivers,
  • high pedestrian visibility from long distances, even in rain and after dusk.

The system can be supplemented with active in-road LED “cat-eye” markers, which flash synchronously with the D-6 signs upon pedestrian detection, further enhancing the visibility of the crossing outline.

Polish LED Luminaires and Certified Hybrid Poles

Our solutions use exclusively Polish-made LED luminaires of the highest quality, with a 5-year warranty and certifications (including ZETOM / ENEC). All systems are designed in accordance with current requirements and lighting standards for pedestrian crossings, including WR-D-41-4.

All hybrid poles (with structure for photovoltaic panels and wind turbine) are fully certified, in accordance with the PN-EN 1090 standard. The main structural components, such as the steel pole with PV panel and turbine frame, hold the required certificates issued by an independent, notified certification body.

The pole structure is structurally calculated for safety for loads related to the weight of the photovoltaic system, wind turbine, and wind load surface, appropriate for the installation site – Wind Zone I, II or III. The entire hybrid pole structure must be manufactured exclusively by a single production facility – combining elements produced by different manufacturers is not permitted.

Applications – Where to Install Active Hybrid Pedestrian Crossings?

The active pedestrian crossing system with hybrid LED lighting and the D-6 sign is used wherever pedestrian safety and visibility improvement are a priority:

  • pedestrian crossings near schools, kindergartens, and universities,
  • traffic-calming zones, residential estates,
  • regional, county, and municipal roads – particularly outside built-up areas,
  • crossings near shopping centers, workplaces, warehouses, and industrial parks,
  • areas with limited visibility – curves, intersections, forest exits,
  • crossings near bus stops and transport hubs.

This solution is especially beneficial in locations where there is no electrical infrastructure or the cost of connecting to it is very high – the hybrid system (solar + wind) operates autonomously, incurs no electricity costs, and simultaneously provides a high level of pedestrian safety.

The active hybrid pedestrian crossing with LED lighting and the D-6 sign is a comprehensive solution for municipalities, cities, and road authorities who want to sustainably and effectively improve the safety of all road users.

The hybrid pole, together with the structure for photovoltaic panels and the bracket for the wind turbine, is adapted for: “Wind zone I, II or III according to PN-EN 1991-1-4”. The main structural elements, such as the steel pole with the frame for photovoltaic panels and the wind turbine, have the required certificates issued by an independent, notified certification body, and are structurally calculated for safety with respect to loads related to the weight of the photovoltaic system and the wind pressure area for the planned installation site.

The hybrid pole is manufactured in accordance with the European approval: PN EN 1090 and is equipped with a DWU – Declaration of Performance for each structural component.

Operating time of the active, safe pedestrian crossing with hybrid lighting:
10–12 hours/day (full power), battery capacity for a minimum of 4 consecutive cloudy, rainy and windless days
– minimum 40h of operation without sunlight. Each of our lamps offers the ability to configure 5 periodic operating modes (adjustment of % light output intensity of the LED luminaire).

Our systems comply with the GUIDELINES FOR PROPER LIGHTING OF PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS – Models and standards recommended by the Minister responsible for transport: WR-D-41-4, which received an official recommendation from the Ministry of Infrastructure on July 20, 2018.
