Active Pedestrian Crossing – Zamojska Street (DK 74), Szczebrzeszyn

In the town of Szczebrzeszyn, an investment project entitled “Reconstruction of Zamojska Street (DK 74)” was implemented, involving the adaptation of the existing sidewalk into a pedestrian and bicycle route, intended to serve as part of a cycling route under the project “Construction of a Bicycle Route in Eastern Poland”.

A key element in improving safety within the new pedestrian and bicycle route was the use of a hybrid, active, double-sided D-6 pylon, designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists at the point where they cross the national road.

The D-6 sign was installed above the roadway on a 6-meter-long boom arm, ensuring excellent visibility for drivers approaching from both directions. The pylon structure is made of S355 steel and features a semi-circular arm, adapted for installation above a national road.

The pylon pole is equipped with two double-sided LED pulsators with a diameter of 300 mm, which flash 24 hours a day, effectively drawing drivers’ attention to the approaching pedestrian crossing.

Additionally, the D-6 sign face is internally illuminated using LED technology, significantly improving readability after dark and in conditions of reduced visibility.

Under the pylon structure, a dedicated LED luminaire for illuminating the pedestrian crossing was installed, controlled by a motion sensor detecting the presence of a pedestrian. The system operates in an energy-saving mode:

  • the crossing illumination operates at 30% power in standby mode,
  • upon detecting a pedestrian, it automatically increases output to 100%,
  • provides excellent visibility of the pedestrian silhouette without causing glare to drivers.

The implemented solution creates a integrated, active warning and illumination system for the pedestrian crossing, perfectly suited to the character of the national road and the newly developed pedestrian and bicycle route.

The investment significantly enhances road traffic safety, increases comfort for users of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and meets current standards for modern pedestrian crossings implemented under nationwide projects.
