Active / Intelligent Pedestrian Crossing
Active / Intelligent Pedestrian Crossing D-6 – “Walking Figure / SIGN FLASH” System
Active pedestrian crossing D-6 of the “Walking Figure” / SIGN FLASH type is an intelligent system designed to enhance pedestrian safety. Built-in energy-efficient LEDs and motion sensors activate the signaling only when a pedestrian is present in the crossing area. This provides drivers with a dynamic, highly visible warning signal, encouraging immediate speed reduction.
The system is intended for installation in particularly hazardous locations, such as near schools, residential areas, local roads, intersections, areas with limited visibility, and crossings with high pedestrian traffic.
Key Features and Advantages
- Activation only when a pedestrian is detected – prevents driver habituation
- Dual motion sensor with high resistance to false detections (e.g., vehicles)
- Wireless communication – simultaneous activation of signs on both sides of the road
- Very low energy consumption thanks to latest-generation LEDs
- Ultra-thin sign panel – only 2 cm thick
- Integration capability with active “cat’s eyes”
- Mountable on poles Ø60 / Ø76 mm
- Brightness control – visible during the day without dazzling drivers at night
- Compliant with PN-EN 12352 standard
Advanced Electronics and Control
- Miniature switching power supply – up to 3× lower energy consumption compared to standard solutions
- Intelligent system controller – extends operation when using solar power by over 40%
- Protection against false signal activation
Power Supply Options
- Solar power – full autonomy, ideal for locations without infrastructure
- Hybrid system – photovoltaic panel + wind turbine
- 230V AC supply – operation with battery buffer possible
- Option for streetlamp connection (buffer system)
Applications
- Schools and kindergartens
- Residential neighborhoods
- Local and residential roads
- Crossings with limited visibility
- High pedestrian traffic areas
Active pedestrian crossing “Walking Figure / SIGN FLASH” is an effective method for improving pedestrian safety at critical points on the road. Intelligent pedestrian detection, low energy consumption, and solar or hybrid power options ensure reliable operation under any conditions.
Active / Smart Pedestrian Crossing
Types of Pedestrian Crossings
According to regulations, there are two main types of pedestrian crossings. The first type is level crossings, which can be signalized with traffic lights or unsignalized. The second type is grade-separated crossings, either underground or elevated. Among these, modern smart pedestrian crossings may be implemented.
What is a Smart Pedestrian Crossing?
A smart pedestrian crossing is an advanced system that responds to the presence of pedestrians in a designated area. It activates visual signals visible to drivers and auditory signals for pedestrians waiting to cross. Often called active pedestrian crossings, their primary goal is to reduce the risk of accidents and facilitate pedestrian traffic.
Our solutions are active / smart pedestrian crossings already widely adopted and proven effective.
How Does a Smart Pedestrian Crossing Work?
Smart pedestrian crossings improve pedestrian visibility and inform drivers of approaching pedestrians. The system includes multiple components:
- white zebra stripes on the road, often on a red background,
- motion sensors and cameras,
- lamp around the D6 sign,
- LED lighting in the crossing zone,
- control cabinet,
- speakers,
- reflective elements on the roadway.
Proper and uninterrupted operation of these elements ensures pedestrian safety while crossing the street.
Operational Principle
When a pedestrian enters the detection zone, sensors trigger warning lights that catch drivers’ attention. Speakers emit sound cues, especially helpful for visually impaired pedestrians. After the pedestrian crosses safely, all signals deactivate, allowing vehicles to proceed.
Why Implement Smart Pedestrian Crossings?
Smart crossings enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians. Drivers notice the crossing and reduce speed, while pedestrians spend less time waiting to cross. This reduces the risk of accidents and dangerous situations. Traditional crossings often remain poorly visible, and before regulations granting pedestrian priority, many drivers did not stop. Smart crossings significantly improve safety for both parties.
Advantages of Smart Pedestrian Crossings
- Increased safety for all road users
- Lower cost compared to full traffic light installations
- Shorter pedestrian waiting times, maintaining smooth traffic flow
- Simple and quick installation process
Active, also called smart, pedestrian crossings are a cost-effective investment that ensures high safety levels for both pedestrians and drivers. Our team provides expert guidance to select the best system for your area.
Goals of Smart Pedestrian Crossings
Smart pedestrian crossings are technologically advanced solutions aimed at improving pedestrian safety and comfort while crossing streets or intersections. Key aspects include:
- Traffic signals: Adaptive lighting that adjusts based on pedestrian and vehicle flow. It can extend crossing time if needed.
- Sensors and cameras: Monitor pedestrian movement and adjust signals or respond to emergencies.
- Warning systems: Light or sound alerts to increase driver awareness of pedestrians.
- Informational displays: Show remaining time to cross, temperature, or road warnings.
- Integrated transport systems: Can be linked with traffic control systems or mobile apps for real-time pedestrian monitoring.
The main objectives of smart crossings are to enhance safety and comfort, reduce accidents, and improve accessibility for persons with limited mobility. Their development continues as part of efforts toward smarter, more sustainable cities.
